CDM Inspections across the South East

Welcome to ROPKINS Health & Safety. As well as carrying out Health and Safety Site Inspections and Audits, we are able to assist duty holders; Principal Contractors / Contractors in meeting their obligations under the CDM Regulations and other industry related regulations.

As a first port of call, we would recommend that if you are a duty holder, please download a free copy of the publication; Managing Health & Safety in Construction - Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (L153). This clearly outlines the requirements of the regulations along with your duties under the regulations. It can be downloaded here: Guidance on Regulations

Principal Contractors

We can assist the main contractor (Principal Contractor) on meeting their duties under the regulations. What are your duties?

Duties include;
  • Liaising with the client and principal designer
  • Preparing a Construction Phase Plan (including RAMS)
  • Organising cooperation between contractors and coordinating their work.
  • Ensure suitable site inductions are carried out
  • Ensure unauthorised access is prevented
  • Welfare is provided (in accordance with the CDM regulations)
  • Workforce are consulted and engaged in securing their health and safety
You will need to demonstrate competence to carry out the works under CDM. This either requires having an in-house Health & Safety Advisor or appointing an external Health & Safety Advisor. It is advised that monthly written inspections are carried out by your appointed health and safety advisor.

Training / Competence

You will need to demonstrate that all operatives working on the project are deemed competent to carry out the works. Training will therefore be required if not already in place. This includes subcontractors; you must be satisfied that they are competent and equipped to carry out the works safely.
Having some form of site management health and safety qualification is a legal requirement.
Ideally, an SMSTS trained Site Manager will need to be on site at all times. Therefore, it is advisable to have 2 persons trained in case one is indisposed for any reason.
A fully qualified first aider is required to be on site at all times.
A fire marshall is required to be on site at all times.

Additionally, you will need to comply with all other relevant regulations, such as the Work at Height Regulations, Control of Asbestos Regulations, COSHH Regulations and many more.
